For the Director
This is a special time of the year for almost everyone. For business owners it signifies many things as well; such as holiday shopping and it's revenue, end of year tax payment, coming of the coldest time of the year' etc. We wish you prosperity and the very best new year possible.
On Southern Boulevard 2014 was a year of change. Several stores such as Sol's Pharmacies left the district after many years on the Boulevard. Many other stores came like Xios and the Children's place. STREETWEAR also expanded making them a four-store chain in the district. Many store owners saw growth in the numbers of shoppers in 2014. We anticipate an even better 2015.
In recent months we have seen an increase in the presence of NYPD officers walking the district. During the holiday season NYPD assigns more foot patrol in the district. So you should see pairs of officers walking the beat frequently. Also to support and enhance security during the season, from December 20 to January 3, the BID will provide Security Guards who patrol the District from 12 noon to 8 pm daily. Security guards will visit each store throughout the day as frequently as possible. On a more permanent basis, an NYPD officer has been assigned to the district. Police Officer Malavé will patrol the district Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:30 pm. He can be seen scooting around on his small motor vehicle.
Partnering with Casita Maria Center for Arts and Culture and Community Board 2, on December 17, the BID proudly sponsored a coat drive that purchased and distributed 600 coats to needy children around the district. The following Property owners and Members of the Board of Directors of the BID personally donated to the coat drive: William Feldman, Steve Tsavaris, Julio Gurman, Nick Lugo, James Demetriou, and Mike Oshinsky. Several merchants contributed to the coat drive including Regine's, Boulevard Menswear and Manfix, Dress Code and Double Discount. These merchants were extremely generous and the BID is grateful for the support. Our coat drive shows local customers that we care.
In 2015 we plan to have more events on the Boulevard such as our annual Back to School street festival. The BID will also provide health information, this newsletter and ongoing advertisement of the shopping corridor. We wish each merchant a healthy and prosperous holiday season and a great new year.
