For the Director

This month the BID celebrates 5 years in existence. In those five years the BID has maintained the streets cleaner than ever, worked with NYPD and private security to keep the district safe and expanded the marketing efforts as a result of receiving a grant from NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS).

Throughout the summer, the BID sponsored 4 successful Sidewalk Sales days. On August 24 the BID sponsored a Back to School Sidewalk Sale with games and prizes. The BID also gave away 300 book bags. Well Care participated in the Sidewalk Sale giving away hundreds of book bags as well. Stores report a sharp increase in sales on those days. Store owners are actually trying to increase the number of Sidewalk Sales days throughout the year. Merchants are working with the Community Board #2 to get the City to soften regulations on Southern Boulevard thereby allowing stores to display merchandise three feet in front of the stores. Currently the Boulevard has a zero visibility policy.

The BID Welcomes Planet Fitness to the district. Planet Fitness opened at1030 Southern Boulevard in late July. With a 2 story facility, the gym has the capacity for hundreds of members. Although the district welcomes Planet Fitness it appears that there was room for only one gym as the coming of Planet Fitness signaled the end of Rio Fitness on Southern Boulevard. Rio was a smaller, privately owned gym and Planet Fitness is attached to a corporation yet we expect the community to respond positively. We hope much success to Planet Fitness on Southern Boulevard. Planet Fitness 1030 Southern Boulevard, Bronx NY 10459. 718-326-5839 Open 24 Hours Monday-Friday Open Monday at 12 am until Friday at 10 pm Saturday and Sunday 7 am to 7 pm.

One of the Businesses with the largest presence on the Boulevard is Ponce De Leon Federal Bank. Located at various addresses on Southern Boulevard for decades, this bank has maintained a significant influence on small business throughout the Bronx. Significant in the success of the bank was the recently deceased, Mr. Ernasto Torres. Please see his story attached. Ponce De Leon Bank is one of the few truly bilingual banks in the nation. They offer service to the smallest depositor to some of the biggest businesses in Hunts Point. All customers are treated the same; with courtesy and attention to their specific needs. Since a large fire on Southern Boulevard that dislocated the bank, it has been located on the second floor of 952 Southern Boulevard. A grand opening for the bank at 980 Southern Boulevard is scheduled for October 2013.
